Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga begins in the wake of a devastating global apocalypse. The younger Furiosa is being raised in the lush environment of the Green Place but is kidnapped by warlord Dementus and sold into slavery.

Many years later, Furiosa finds herself caught in an escalating war between Dementus and the ruthless Immortan Joe who looks to command the Citadel with his warboys.

All the while, Furiosa plots her return to her beloved Green Place.

Who stars in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga?

Anya Taylor-Joy, the versatile star of The Witch and The Queen's Gambit, plays the younger Furiosa who ascends to the role of Imperator. Chris Hemsworth takes a break from Thor and MCU duties to appear as Furiosa's nemesis, Warlord Dementus.

The movie shows Furiosa's pivotal transition from an innocent young girl to a shaven-headed, metal-armed warrior. Taylor-Joy tells Entertainment Weekly: "Both were important steps that we had to take if we were going to be able to chart the journey of how this little girl became a character that now we all know and love."

Of the original Mad Max series, Australian-born Hemsworth tells Entertainment Weekly: "I grew up on this s**t, and it was so exciting to be a part of it."

The cast also includes Tom Burke (Mank) as Praetorian Jack, who appears to be Furiosa's childhood friend from the Green Place, Lachy Hulme (who appeared in George Miller's Three Thousand Years of Longing, 2022) as the younger Immortan Joe and WWE Wrestler Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus.

Will Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy appear in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga?

Unclear at this stage. Charlize Theron's appearance would only make logical sense if, at the end of the movie, we got a transition from the younger to the older Furiosa. 

Tom Hardy could make an appearance if it's established that the younger Furiosa had already crossed paths with Mad Max prior to the events of Fury Road.

Who directs Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga?

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is directed by George Miller and is the fifth Mad Max movie he's helmed.

The original three Mad Max films starred Mel Gibson, encompassing 1979's Mad Max, 1981's The Road Warrior and 1985's Beyond Thunderdome.

The low-budget Australian thrillers took place in a sand-blasted, post-apocalyptic landscape. The films grabbed the attention with their onslaught of punk-like attire, souped-up vehicles and savage violence, although Thunderdome deviated from the format somewhat with its appearance from Tina Turner.

The series proved hugely influential and helped catapult Gibson to Hollywood fame in the likes of the Lethal Weapon series. Miller took a break from the series and diversified into the likes of horror-comedy The Witches of Eastwick (1987) and moving drama Lorenzo's Oil (1992).

After a long delay, Mad Max: Fury Road was released in 2015, again directed by Miller. It was clear that the filmmaker hadn't lost his edge in the intervening years: the pacing was fierce, the stunts were staggeringly ambitious and there was an effort to keep many of the practical effects in-camera, although extensive CGI was also used.

Mad Max: Fury Road opened to critical and commercial success. It also won six Oscars out of 10 nominations and is widely acclaimed as one of the finest action films of the 2010s.
